SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A strong wind event is forecast to start late Monday with dry north and east winds. Low humidity and recent hot weather will bring very high fire danger.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the interior of Northern California due to gusty winds and low humidity. This includes the Sacramento Valley, northern San Joaquin Valley, the Coastal Range, the Delta, and the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade west of the crest.

On the heels of extreme heat, a shifting weather pattern will produce strong northerly and offshore winds. A high pressure ridge to the west and low to the east will create a pattern that promotes dry, gusty winds.

Under these conditions, fires that start can spread quickly. This makes it difficult for firefighters to gain control of the forward movement.

People in areas prone or at risk of wildfires should prepare now for possible evacuations and power shutoffs.

Make sure you have an evacuation plan and have all the necessary documents and medications ready if you need to leave.

The wind event will last through Wednesday with slightly cooler temperatures and less wind Thursday.
