SACRAMENTO, Calif. — May can be a month of extremes, with record lows commonly in the 30s and record highs close to 100 degrees.
After a cool start to the month, we'll see a sharp rise in temps Wednesday with 80s for highs in the Valley. The average for most Valley locations this time in May is in the upper 70s, as the days get longer and the sun moves higher in the sky.

With the new warm up, we'll see more snowmelt, which means rivers will stay high and lake levels should rise. We'll also see a daily threat of thunderstorms in the Sierra, with brief but heavy rain, gusty winds, lightning, and even small hail possible.
The 80s should last through the weekend and well into next week.
