Chain controls in effect on Highway 50 and 80

With a winter storm warning in effect, Caltrans issued chain controls as rain and snow hit the Sierra.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Chain controls are in effect on Highway 50 and 80 as a winter storm hits the Sierra. Caltrans tweeted saying that snow is expected throughout the day Sunday and into Monday, creating "hazardous driving conditions."

The chain controls go from I-80 westbound from Donner Lake to Rainbow, eastbound from Kingvale to Donner Lake, State Route 267 from Kings Beach to Northstar and SR-28 from Tahoe City to Kings Beach.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that will last until 4 a.m. Monday morning. They expect "lots of rain in the Valley" and Donner Pass could get up to 18 inches of snow. Caltrans is asking people to use their headlights and slow down on the roads as the storm rolls through.

The eastbound I-80 rest area at Donner Summit is closed as crews work on removing snow from the area.

California Highway Patrol in Truckee said there have already been multiple traffic collisions and spin outs Sunday morning due to the weather and wet and icy conditions on the roads.

"Some of these traffic collisions occurred beyond the chain control where there is no snow on the roadway, but the roadway is still extremely wet and icy!" CHP Truckee said in a tweet.

CHP said that the people in the accident shown in the tweet luckily only had minor injuries. They are advising people to slow down on the roads.
