Why students in North Highlands are sharing their immigration stories

The point of the school project is to put a face on immigration and build empathy within the community, especially during the current tumultuous times.

Students at Futures High School in North Highlands are reminding people of history through their own immigration stories.

"Life was stable," said Ade Ilori, a senior at Futures High School. "We had a nice house. Everybody was so interactive."

Ilori came to the U.S. with his mom and siblings from Nigeria.

"People know America was different in some way," Ilori said. "They didn't know the opportunities. It was a mysterious place and that's why my mom wanted to come here with us."

Another senior, Irina Fomina, is from Moldova.

"I wasn't talkative and I didn't know English," said Fomina. "The United States is a greater country in size and obviously there would be more opportunities, simple things like better jobs, better paying jobs than where I came from."

The point of the school project is to put a face on immigration and build empathy within the community, especially during the current tumultuous times.

"It's really to inspire people that we're all different and tell people that they shouldn't be scared to bring their story out to the world," Ilori said.

Ilori will be going to UC Davis. Flomina will be starting college in the summer to be an ultrasound technician.
