SACRAMENTO, California — Not one but two baby animals were born at the Sacramento Zoo on Friday: a red panda and a Wolf’s Guenon.
Weeks ago, the Sacramento Zoo posted on Facebook an ultrasound image without revealing which animal was pregnant. But on Friday, the zoo announced on Facebook there were two births.
The ultrasound picture was a red panda, according to the Sacramento Zoo's post on Facebook. Including the newly born red panda cub, there are now 225 red pandas at zoos across North America.
Because red pandas have a high mortality rate of roughly 50 percent, a care team will continue to monitor the cub's health.
The Sacramento Zoo wrote that the birth of the Wolf's Guenon will help them learn more about this Central American species of monkey. Zoo scientists hope to learn about "their biology, social interactions, developmental stages and more."
The newborn and its family will be visible to zoo guests on most days, according to the press release.
