Brief cool down in sight for Northern California after spate of above-average heat

Sunday will be a big day of change as temperatures drop by 10 degrees or more with highs only in the upper 80s.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After more than a week of heat for Northern California, a welcome change is coming.

Many days in June have been well above average. This week has been more of the same with high temperatures routinely hitting the upper 90s with some days over 100 degrees.

The peak of the current heatwave will be Thursday and Friday afternoon with most valley highs well over 100 degrees and getting close to local records.

Morning lows have often been in the upper 60s because of the heat during the day and little cooling overnight.

Because of the high temperatures, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a 6-day Heat Advisory for most valley locations and portions of the Sierra as well. The Heat Advisory should end this Saturday at 8 p.m.

Sunday will be a big day of change as temperatures drop by 10 degrees or more with highs only in the upper 80s. This is closer to the average for this time in June and in some cases the temperatures may be slightly below average.

The relatively cooler weather should last for a few days but the forecast calls for more 100-degree heat by the end of next week.
