Growing up a "Toys R Us" kid will soon be a thing of the past for U.S. children.
The toy retailer filed for liquidation early Thursday, a move that will likely mean closing all its stores, including Babies R Us locations, and selling remaining merchandise.
The company stated in court documents it initially planned to keep 400 stores operating before the 2018 holiday season, but didn't have the cash to keep the stores open.
If Toys R Us wanted to keep the 400 stores open, the projected cash-burn was estimated to reach $50 to $100 million a month, even without any additional investments to the stores, according to court documents
The New Jersey-based chain said it will pay its 33,000 employees for "no fewer" than 60 days, as required by law. Each store location has approximately 25 to 30 full-time employees. There are currently 735 stores still open in the U.S., including 11 in the Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto area.
There is also a Toys R Us distribution center located in Stockton which has 88 employees, according to a letter Toys R Us sent to the state of California obtained by ABC10.
