4 killed after car crashes into trees in Granite Bay identified | Updates

California Highway Patrol says the vehicle caught fire after hitting the tree.

GRANITE BAY, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol has released more information about a fiery, single-vehicle accident in Granite Bay Wednesday night that left four people dead.

According to CHP, the accident happened around 9 p.m. at the intersection of East Roseville Parkway and Brackenbury Way.

CHP said the driver of a white Mercedes was going eastbound on Roseville Parkway when he went off the right side of the road, hit a tree and then hit a second tree.

The driver and his three passengers all died at the scene. The road was closed for about four hours for the crash investigation.

The three passengers were identified by the Placer County Sheriff's Office as:

  • Patrick Gainer, age 65
  • Paul Hammack, age 53
  • Karan Pannu, 45

The driver was identified as 61-year-old Jerry Cepel.

It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
