ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Hundreds of racers, from preschoolers to retirees, are taking on the race track at Oak Creek BMX in Roseville this weekend as part of the USA BMX Nor-Cal Nationals.
More than 4,000 people were expected to attend, generating an estimated $1.5 million dollars for local businesses, from hotels to restaurants.
"We're just excited to be in Roseville to see our old friends and new friends," said Justin Wahl, USA BMX media manager and photographer. "It's cool to see, especially, rolling into a random diner in the morning and you see BMX racers over in the corner."
He captured the action Friday afternoon, before a Saturday rainstorm put a damper on the three day event.
Tarps saved the course most of Saturday, but racing continued later that evening.
BMX enthusiasts call it a family sport since racers representing every skill level and age group are able to participate.
"It's a family sport on the racer side, but it's also the family sport on the spectator side. Whether you're four years old or 75 years old, you're gonna see people that are your age competing, we're just excited to get people to come out and watch it," said Wahl.
Races begin at 8 a.m. Sunday. Admission is free, but parking costs $15.
