Behind the scenes: Sacramento movie extra speaks out on experience

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Hollywood film crews took over parts of downtown Sacramento earlier this year.

When the yet-to-be named film debuts, you might see one of your neighbors in the background.

“It was exciting to see them not just downtown, but literally right in front of my house,” said Mariela Hernandez, who captured video of director Paul Thomas Anderson on her sidewalk, as well as a shot of star Leonardo DiCaprio in a black hat and face mask.

After getting the behind-the-scenes video, Hernandez got a job as an extra – traveling to Galt to do background in an action sequence.

“I had no idea that we would be running into the back of a trailer. That was pretty different,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez has worked background before, in movies like Matrix Resurrections and the show This is Us.

On this film, she rubbed shoulders with some of the other actors.

“Wood Harris actually came up to me and we chatted a little bit,” Hernandez said.

She also spoke to Alana Haim, best known for her work in a band with her sisters, and Regina Hall.

“[Hall] loved Sacramento. Loved the different neighborhoods and talked about how nice we were, and how good the food is around here,” Hernandez said.
