Empowering Dreams: Nora Paine shares the magic of the Penguin Project and inclusive theater

New Tampa Players' Penguin Project is one of 52 nationwide bringing the magic of theater to aspiring actors of all ages who have special needs.

TAMPA, Florida — In the bustling world of theater, Nora Paine wears many hats. As the Producing Artistic Director of New Tampa Players, her passion extends beyond the spotlight to a transformative program known as the Penguin Project. In a recent interview, Nora shed light on the profound impact of this initiative, a theater program dedicated to children and young adults with special needs.

"Penguin Project is my big thing," Nora shared with enthusiasm. "It's a national program, and we're fortunate to have a chapter right here in Tampa—one of the 52 chapters across the country. Ours is about five years old, and we're dedicated to bringing the magic of theater to children and young adults with special needs."

The heart of the Penguin Project lies in its commitment to inclusivity. Nora and her team produce full-length musicals annually, featuring a cast of approximately 100 to 120 individuals ranging from nine to 42 years old.

"The arts give us so much, and everyone deserves access to them," Nora emphasized. "With performing arts, you gain self-confidence, the ability to speak in front of people, the joy of singing and dancing—all wrapped up in a shared experience with a diverse group of individuals."

Currently immersed in the production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," set to grace the stage in April, Nora is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where participants can shine.

"Theater has a unique way of breaking barriers and fostering a sense of belonging," she said.

In a heartwarming collaboration, Dr. David, a pediatrician celebrating his 25th year of service, has chosen to commemorate this milestone by supporting the Penguin Project and Ampersand Theater.

Nora excitedly shared, "On Dec. 3 at 2 o'clock, Dr. David is hosting a concert, and all proceeds will go towards supporting our Penguin Project and Ampersand Theater. We are deeply grateful for his generosity."

As Nora Paine continues to weave the fabric of inclusivity through the arts, the Penguin Project stands as a testament to the transformative power of theater, creating a stage where everyone's dreams can take center spotlight.
