Overwatch | What parents should know about this video game

This video game is played by over 40 million people, monthly. If you don't know about this game, it's okay - you can learn.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Overwatch is played by over 40 million people monthly, but, if you have never heard of Overwatch, here is a break down of what the game is about.

What is Overwatch

Overwatch first came out in 2016, and, since then, the number of players has grown to over 40 million a month.

The game is rated for teens and older to play by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. It is also made by Blizzard Entertainment, which is known for creating World of Warcraft.

Players start by picking a character and then playing on a team of six to kill other player characters in order to complete the chosen game's objective.

After picking a hero to play as in the game, players have a choice of a few different games to play:

  • Quick Play - matches players of similar skill.
  • Play vs. AI - pits human players against artificial-intelligence opponents, with multiple difficulty settings.
  • Game Browser - lets players find and create their own game.
  • Practice Range - lets players hone their skills.
  • Arcade - offers matches with unique, seasonal rules and weekly rewards.
  • Competitive play - allows players to compete against other players while moving up in ranks and earning rewards.

Through fighting and oftentimes through teamwork, players accomplish their tasks. Each match successfully ends when the players complete their mission.

Critics of the video game say that the game is bloody and that users of the game use foul language. Supporters of the game say that the game promotes teamwork and that the violence is not as bad compared to other games.

The game is playable on Windows PC, the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, and Xbox One.

It was added to the list of e-sports that are televised when Blizzard made a deal with Disney XD, ESPN, and ABC to air the various competitions. The season goes from February until August when they have a large competition in Los Angeles.
