SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A bill that would prevent major rent hikes across the state passed the California Assembly on Wednesday.
Assembly Bill 1482, which now goes to the state Senate, would prohibit landlords from raising rent by more than 7-percent plus inflation over the course of a year.
For several years, rent control advocates have been pushing for legislation to protect tenants from unlimited rent increases.
According to the Mercury News, if AB 1482 passes the Senate, California would become the second state in the country this year to limit annual rent hikes.
Right now, only about a dozen cities in the state have rent control laws. Sacramento is not one of those cities. Mercury News reports that AB 1482 would exempt properties that are less than 10 years old.
