Court Documents: Ex-MLB pitcher accused of killing father-in-law during burglary

The court documents allege that Serafini killed his father-in-law while "lying in wait" with a .22 caliber gun.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — An ex-MLB pitcher is accused of killing his father-in-law during a home burglary in 2021, according to court documents.

Daniel Serafini and Samantha Scott were arrested in connection to a Placer County homicide and attempted homicide in June 2021. Robert Gary Spohr was killed and his wife, Wendy Wood, survived but took her own life earlier this year. The family said they hold the shooter responsible for her death as well.

The sheriff's office said both Serafini and Scott knew each other and the victims. According to public records, Serafini was the son-in-law of the victims. According to a prior statement from daughter Adrienne Spohr, Scott was her sister's close friend.

According to court documents, Serafini and Scott also face charges related to first-degree residential burglary in addition to their other charges. 

The court documents allege that Serafini killed Spohr while "lying in wait" with a .22 caliber gun.

According to the court documents, Serafini is also accused of child endangerment in connection to the shooting. It's not clear how the allegation is connected to the shooting. The children were described as a three-year-old and an eight-month-old.
