CHP: Driver who intentionally crashed into CHP officers in Davis accused of attempted murder

Police said the suspect intentionally crashed head-on into a CHP patrol car along I-80, injuring two officers.

DAVIS, Calif — A man who intentionally crashed into two California Highway Patrol officers along Interstate 80 last month is being accused of attempted murder, the Yolo County District Attorney's Office announced Monday.

The suspect, 33-year-old Samuel Hanawalt of Davis, was arrested Friday, but the crash happened March 13 after CHP said the two officers were targeted by Hanawalt. CHP said he intentionally crashed his car head-on into the officers' stopped patrol car.

According to CHP, the officers were both in the same car on the right-hand shoulder of I-80 when they were hit head on, just west of Mace Boulevard. The officers had finished up a traffic stop before the crash.

Police said Hanawalt drove his car at a high rate of speed along the right shoulder and hit the vehicle head on. A video of the crash is available below.

The officers were left with minor to moderate injuries, and Hanawalt had minor injuries.

Hanawalt faces several felony charges, including: two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of driving on the wrong side of a divided highway which led to injury.

Hanawalt is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Yolo County Superior Court.
