Suspect in double homicide dies after shooting himself near Arden Fair Mall

The sheriff's office said the suspect ultimately died after being taken to a hospital.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The suspect in a Sacramento County double homicide died after shooting himself near Arden Fair Mall.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Ricky Hunter, 32, is the suspect in a double homicide that happened Wednesday night along Howe Avenue. Two women were shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex and died at the scene. The names of the women haven't been released yet.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, says deputies tracked Hunter to the AT&T store near the mall just after 2 p.m. but waited to arrest him until he got into his car.

The sheriff's office said Hunter was considered armed and dangerous and waited until he got to his car to avoid a dangerous situation inside a crowded shopping area.

Gandhi says Hunter grabbed a shotgun and shot himself in the chest as deputies tried to arrest him. Officials said detectives converged on him at gunpoint before Hunter shot himself.

Detectives treated him at the scene with a chest seal until he was taken to a hospital. However, in an update, the sheriff's office said the suspect ultimately died.
