Suspect in Sacramento County chase that led to crash, deadly police shooting identified

Officials say the chase started near I-80 and Norwood, and ended when the suspect crashed into a motorcyclist near Greenback Lane.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — The suspect involved in a chase, crash and deadly law enforcement shooting near Citrus Heights was identified Monday as 36-year-old Zachary Wolffscott.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says the chase between a CHP motorcycle officer and silver-colored Toyota Prius started near Interstate 80 and Norwood around 12:20 p.m. Sunday. They were eventually joined by a canine sheriff's deputy and another CHP officer.

Deputies say the chase came to a stop when Wolffscott collided with a man on a motorcycle near Greenback Lane along I-80. He got out of the car and allegedly pulled out a knife.

Deputies say he started approaching the officers and ignoring calls to stop when law enforcement opened fire. Both CHP officers and a Sacramento deputy were involved in the shooting.

Wolffscott was taken to the hospital but ultimately died. The motorcyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries, but he is expected to survive.

The shooting remains under investigation.

An independent review will be done by the district attorney's office. The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on leave pending the investigation.
