Woman killed in Sacramento hit-and-run

Officials say the accident happened in the area of Freeport Boulevard and Potrero Way just before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A woman is dead after being hit by a car that then took off from the scene, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Officials say the hit-and-run happened in the area of Freeport Boulevard and Potrero Way just before 6 p.m. Officers were called to the area and said callers told them the car involved drove off from the scene.

Officer Anthony Gamble, spokesperson for Sacramento Police Department, said officers found a woman in her 60s with significant injuries at the scene. She was taken to a hospital where she ultimately died.

Gamble said the woman might have been on a bike during the collision, but it's not clear what led up to the crash. No information on a suspect vehicle was available.

Police are in the area investigating and have closed both ways of Freeport Boulevard between Irvin Way and Wentworth Avenue. There is no estimated time of reopening and officials urge drivers to use different routes.
