DA: Former Plumas County Sheriff's Office dispatcher charged with embezzling donated funds

The DA’s office says she allegedly spent the funds on: her children, concerts, designer clothing, alcohol and more.

PLUMAS COUNTY, Calif. — A Plumas County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher is being accused of embezzling more than $20,000 from the office’s general fund and fundraising accounts for buying children Christmas presents, according to the Plumas County District Attorney's Office.

Cassandra Beth Lavley, a dispatcher and the secretary and treasurer of the Plumas County Sheriff’s Employees Association, allegedly took the funds in the 2022-23 year, the DA’s complaint says.

The funds primarily came from two accounts: the “Main Account,” made up of association member dues, and the “Needy Children Account,” primarily made up of community donations for holiday charitable activities.

The DA’s office says she allegedly spent the funds on: her children, concerts, designer clothing, furniture, televisions, a mattress, alcohol and food at Costco, Amazon and other retailers.

The complaint says Lavley posted to social media about events she was going to, her daughters home and more, allowing investigators to “identify a number of items purchased.”

The complaint says Lavley resigned from her position Nov. 20, 2023 and was placed on administrative leave the very next day.

Lavley’s bail is set at $50,000 and “any proffered bail (will) be examined by the court to make sure it originated from a lawful source,” according to the DA’s office.

She’s expected to be in a non-Plumas County facility until her arraignment Monday.
