Family: Sacramento nightclub shooting victim was 'at the wrong place at the wrong time'

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said gang members refused to leave the bar, then got into a fight in the parking lot. Two people were shot and killed.

SACRAMENTO, California — In a candlelight vigil in remembrance of Ryu Kai Her, family members said the 23-year-old was not a gang member, but someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time when gang members opened fire outside a South Sacramento nightclub early Sunday morning. The shooting killed him and the bar's owner.

His mother, Mee Yang, said her son loved cars and dogs and brought smiles into any room.

"He was real loved by many. He has many family and friends. He has shined so many lights," Yang said.

Her went with friends to Sacto by Night's Hmong New Year party Saturday night, where the deadly shooting occurred.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said a group of gang members refused to leave the bar, then got into a fight in the parking lot. Two people were shot and killed: the club's owner and Her.

"I want to clear the record. My son is not a gang member. He lived a beautiful life," Yang said.

The sheriff's office said CHP detained suspects connected to the shooting in a traffic stop near the scene, recovering multiple weapons. Their identities will be released when charges are filed, the sheriff's office said.

Yang said her family would be waiting patiently for the justice system to proceed.

"He was such a character. He loved sports, he loved fishing, he was on the praise and worship team. But again, he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," Yang said.
