Sports bar employee recovering after being stabbed in Sacramento County

The stabbing happened at Mr. Tequila Sports Bar in Rancho Cordova around 11:15 p.m., according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A Sacramento County sports bar employee is recovering in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times while protecting a fellow coworker Thursday.

The stabbing happened at Mr. Tequila Sports Bar in Rancho Cordova around 11:15 p.m., according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's office spokesperson Amar Gandhi said a man went into the bar and tried to get an alcoholic beverage without money. He was turned away and Gandhi said he started following a waitress around when she went into an employee area. Another employee tried to intervene and was stabbed multiple times.

The employee was significantly injured and has life threatening injuries, according to officials.

"This business being a new business, we want to see it thrive. So, this is really tragic to know that something happened in such a new business. We don't want them to leave town. We don't want people reluctant to come in,” said Tallie Miller who works nearby.

The sheriff's office said 36-year-old Delance Jefferson was arrested on suspicion of stabbing the man.

Miller says she’s worried about safety in the area, but the owner of the sports bar says he’s hiring his own private security to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.

Gandhi says there have been no previous incidents like this at the bar and this was an isolated incident.
