Stockton man arrested for child abuse in connection to 4-year-old daughter's death

Investigators wrote a "retinal hemorrhage" injury "could only occur by substantial shaking or by a massive external force, such as a car accident."

STOCKTON, Calif. — A Stockton man was arrested on felony child abuse complaints in connection to his 4-year-old daughter’s death back in November 2018.

Serenity Moore was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in late November with severe injuries. Police later determined those injuries were the result of child abuse.

Serenity’s stepmother, 21-year-old Zulma Chavez-Ventura, was charged with homicide and felony child abuse.

On Wednesday, Stockton Police arrested 39-year-old Kevin Carames Sr., Serenity’s biological father, in connection to her death.

Court documents from the stepmother’s arrest detailed the horrific injuries suffered by the girl at the time of her death. Investigators wrote a "retinal hemorrhage" injury "could only occur by substantial shaking or by a massive external force, such as a car accident."

In the report, the girl's father and stepmother said Serenity was injured by "running into a ladder attached to a bunk bed." The incident allegedly took place at the couple’s Stockton home, located in the 8000 block of Rice Court.

A court date has not yet been set for Carames.
