Suspect in deadly Citrus Heights stabbing arrested

Police said the suspect and victim appeared to be "general acquaintances" and were unhoused.

CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — The suspect in a deadly stabbing in Citrus Heights was put behind bars Monday evening.

According to the Citrus Heights Police Department, officers responded to a reported stabbing along the 6400 block of Antelope Road just before 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Arriving officers found a man unresponsive near a closed business, but despite efforts from first responders to save his life, the man ultimately died from his injuries.

The man hasn't been identified at this time, but police said the suspect and victim appeared to be "general acquaintances" and were unhoused.

The suspect was identified as Steven Cardenas, 35.  He was brought into custody on a murder warrant near the border of Citrus Heights and Roseville around 7:40 p.m. Monday evening.

Police also said Cardenas has a history of multiple contacts and arrests during 2023.
