Increase in middle-aged adults reporting brain fog

Adults are reporting having a cloudy mind. An ABC10 health expert says long COVID-19 might be to blame.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Health officials say younger adults mainly under 60 years old are reporting cases of brain fog. That's when you have a change in memory, attention span, and concentration. It is sometimes characterized as not being able to make decisions.

ABC10 Health Expert Dr. Sristi Sharma said the reason for this is unknown, but theories are pointing to COVID-19. When someone experiences health trouble post-COVID diagnosis, it's often referred to as long COVID-19. Sharma said it's something that also impacts 75% of people who've been diagnosed.

"Unfortunately there are no treatments for long COVID-19 at this time, including symptoms of cognitive dysfunction, but there are some things you can definitely do. Maintain a normal healthy diet, exercise regularly and if your symptoms of mental illnesses or cognitive dysfunction even are becoming really severe then you should talk to a therapist," Sharma said.

She also recommends alternative medicine like yoga, meditation or mindfulness.
