9 apartments damaged after fire in Tracy

Officials said the fire was kept from spreading beyond two units, but the other units were impacted by things such as smoke and water damage.

TRACY, Calif. — Nine apartments were damaged after a fire in Tracy Sunday morning.

The South San Joaquin Fire Authority said their crews responded to Tracy Boulevard and Grant Line Road for a report of smoke in the area around 10:30 a.m.

Arriving crews found a fully-engulfed apartment on the first floor of a complex along the 900 block of Grant Line Road. In a news release, officials said the fire was spreading to the apartment above it as well.

28 firefighters were ultimately able to bring the fire under control within about 25 minutes.

"A swift evacuation of nearby residents, an an aggressive initial fire attack by our crews kept the fire from spreading beyond the two units that were initially involved. More importantly, it prevented anyone from being injured in this incident," said Deputy Chief Eric Oliveri.

Officials said it appears the apartment unit where the fire started wasn't occupied and an additional eight apartments had some fire, smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the Red Cross is working with the displaced residents to find temporary housing.

Fire officials stressed the importance of having operational smoke detectors installed on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area and inside every bedroom.
