A's file trademark applications for Sacramento Athletics, Sacramento A's

They’re seeking to potentially use the words on clothing, mascot appearances, for fan clubs, sports camps and both in-person and broadcast events.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — More was going on behind the scenes Thursday as the Oakland Athletics announced an at least three-season move to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento starting in 2025.

Applications were filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the terms Sacramento A’s and Sacramento Athletics.

They’re seeking to potentially use the words on clothing, for mascot appearances, for fan clubs, sports camps and both in-person and broadcast events.

Many people were wondering if the team name would change on Thursday, which Athletics team president Dave Kaval addressed in an exclusive interview with ABC10.

"Well, we're going to play as the Athletics. I think because we're kind of in an interim period we felt that that was the best way to position the club. There are going to be ways, especially with our uniforms that we will honor Sacramento and I think we look forward to displaying those and getting that out in the community. We'll work with all the key local stakeholders to ensure that's done in a really fun way," Kaval said.

So, what happens next now that the paperwork is filed? Here's what the USPTO says:

Well, it will go to an examining attorney who reviews the application and determines if it complies with all the rules.

From there the examining attorney could write a letter explaining a reason for refusal OR it could be approved for publication in the ‘Official Gazette.’ Once it’s published, anyone who thinks they may be damaged by the trademark has 30 days to file an opposition or request an extension to the time.

If there’s no opposition or request, the USPTO will register the trademark and send the owners a certificate of registration. It’ll be up to the holder to maintain registration.

The process generally takes 12-18 months, so if everything goes smoothly, people could potentially see Sacramento A’s merch just in time for opening day at Sutter Health Park.
