Less activity on Black Friday but shoppers still line up in Northern California

A line at Best Buy in Roseville started forming 45 minutes ahead of opening time Friday morning.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Black Friday is here and some families are working off that Thanksgiving feast with some holiday shopping. But in 2023, consumers don't need to camp outside of stores all night to get their hands on a good deal.

A line at Best Buy in Roseville started forming 45 minutes ahead of opening time Friday morning. Dylan Haas shocked himself by becoming the first customer of the day.

“We wanted to get up extra early to beat the line and there's no line,” Haas said. “I'm really surprised. I thought it'd be pushing and shoving.”

He wasn’t the only one surprised by the quiet morning.

“I used to stand for like an hour and a half to two hours to just get into the store,” Vrunda Dave said. “ I think, like maybe, everything is available online. Yeah, people don't bother to wake up early.”

The convenience of online shopping and many companies offering Black Friday deals all week long have more customers skipping the holiday shopping rush altogether.

The shift has taken the Black Friday experience from chaotic to calm and transformed what once was a Thanksgiving tradition.

“It’s a good thing that people don't have to wake up super early, but it was also fun.,” Dave said. “Waiting in the line and then hoping what are we going to get? So that fun is missing.”
