Marysville fire engine responds to crash, falls victim to hit-and-run

Marysville firefighters responded to a single-car crash Saturday night on Highway 70 near Mayer Road when their engine was immediately struck by a vehicle.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A Marysville Fire Department engine was involved in a hit-and-run Saturday night on Highway 70, just north of Yuba City.

Marysville firefighters responded to a single-car crash with injuries on Highway 70 near Mayer Road when their engine was immediately hit by a vehicle, according to a social media post by the California Highway Patrol, which also had officers at the scene.

The vehicle then left the scene southbound toward Yuba City, according to CHP. A support fire engine followed it into Marysville, where the Marysville Police Department eventually stopped the elderly driver.

“As a reminder, California law… states you not only must move over or slow down for (stationary) emergency vehicles… within 1,000 (feet) of an approaching emergency vehicle with lights activated, you shall move to the right and come to a stop until the emergency vehicle has passed,” CHP wrote in the post.

CHP said it also wanted motorists to keep in mind the law requires 300 feet of space between drivers and an emergency vehicle with lights activated because they may come to a stop with little to no warning for the emergency they are responding to.

“No firefighters were hurt in the making of this post, but they want to go home at the end of their shift, so please, pay attention,” CHP said.
