Vallejo Police release video of deadly officer-involved shooting

"Our hope is that this information helps members of the public separate fact from fiction regarding this investigation."

Vallejo Police have released video of a February officer-involved shooting that left a man dead in a Taco Bell drive-thru.

The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. on February 9 at a Taco Bell on Admiral Callaghan Lane.

Police arrived after an employee called about a Silver Mercedes that was parked in the drive-thru lane, a man slumped over in the driver's seat.

When officers arrived they found 20-year-old Willie McCoy passed out in the locked car with a handgun on his lap and the transmission in drive. The two officers did not attempt to wake McCoy and waited for back-up while making sure that no one else tried to walk towards the car.

Vallejo Police say they were placing another patrol car behind McCoy's car when he began to move. Officers told him to keep his hands where they could see them several times.

Officers say McCoy reached for the gun on his lap and, fearing for their own safety, the six officers began shooting at him. The shooting lasted approximately four seconds, and all six officers unloaded their weapons.

The officers called for medical help and began trying to save McCoy's life, but he died in the parking lot. The handgun, a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic, was reportedly stolen from Oregon.

All of the officers involved in the shooting were on administrative leave but have since been "deemed able to return to their regular duties," according to a police department press release.

The shooting remains under investigation as part of the Solano County Fatal Incident Protocol.

Vallejo Police released what they are calling an "informational video" to help explain how the events of February 9 unfolded. The video shows body camera footage from each of the six officers involved in the shooting and allows viewers to listen to the audio from the original 911 call.

"This is our first time releasing video in this fashion," said the department in a press release. "It is our hope that we provided sufficient context for the community to understand the facts of this incident."

Police decided not to include video of the officers attempting to save McCoy's life out of respect for his family and McCoy's privacy.  The coroner has not released the autopsy report yet.
