First-and-only woman elected to California State Superintendent dies at 76

Representatives for Delaine Eastin shared a post on her official social media pages Wednesday.

DAVIS, Calif. — Delaine Eastin, the first and only woman elected as California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, has died at 76, according to her spokespeople.

Representatives shared to her Facebook page Wednesday that she died peacefully in the evening surrounded by loved ones.

"Delaine will be remembered for her boundless intellect, infinitely compassionate spirit, sharp sense of humor, and courageous leadership in local, state, national, and international realms. Her love of education, children, animals, gardens, and the arts shined through everything that she did," the post read. “A public celebration of life will be held this summer; details and location will be shared in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, please consider holding gifts until arrangements can be made.”

Eastin served in the California State Assembly representing portions of the Bay Area before serving as State Superintendent from 1995-2003. She earned her bachelor's degree from UC Davis before serving in local politics.
