Hateful message found on Davis elementary school classroom

Davis police told ABC10 the graffiti, which was written in chalk, was removed before officers arrived on campus.

DAVIS, Calif. — A hate incident is under investigation at Davis Joint Unified School District.

A Korematsu Elementary School staff member found the N-word written on a Black teacher's classroom last week.

Superintendent Matt Best told parents in an email that he was saddened and outraged by the senseless, racist act.

"This targeted act of hate has caused fear and anxiety, especially among teachers, staff and students of color," Best said in the letter to parents.

Davis police told ABC10 the graffiti, which was written in chalk, was removed before officers arrived on campus.

The superintendent told parents they are developing a new hate incident and vandalism protocol to be used across the district in making sure each incident is dealt with appropriately.

ABC10 spoke with a person who recently graduated from the school district and said they were shocked about the incident.

"I think it really crazy and sad that is the kind of world we live in today," said Aniyah Mathison, a Davis resident. "I am a little surprised because Davis is not really been like that before. I do not think I have experienced here or anything like that."
