Elk Grove basketball league may suspend season without a new gym

A West Coast Basketball Association (WCBA) spokesperson told ABC10 that 28 games this season depend on them finding a new gym to host families.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Elk Grove's West Coast Basketball Association (WCBA) needs a new gym to host about one-third of their games, and the rest of the league's season might depend on it.

WCBA spokesperson William Chan told ABC10 one of the three gyms where they hosted basketball games is no longer available after issues with their hoops.

Until the equipment at Katherine L. Albiani Middle School is available, a planned 28 basketball games have no gym to host.

"We might have to postpone the season," Chan said. "We need a gym that can host not only games, but the family members watching and parking as well. It's always tough to find gyms."

He said the league usually rents gyms directly from local school districts including Elk Grove, Sacramento City and Natomas Unified. But church gyms are more difficult to reserve because they often prioritize church members for space use, Chan said.

Though WCBA will start arranging gyms for the Fall season, they are also continuing the search for a gym to continue their current season's games.

"We rely on others for gym space, that's why we're having such a problem with gym space. How do we pivot from here because it's a facility problem?" Chan said. "Everyone in the community loves what we're doing, and we're hoping someone can help us out."

WCBA is a youth basketball league in the Sacramento area open to players, volunteer coaches and referees, with a mission to unite the community though the sport of basketball.
