Ethel Phillips Elementary students hospitalized after freon leak in classroom

The school district is now repairing the HVAC system in the classroom

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At least 10 Ethel Phillips Elementary School students were taken to the hospital after an unidentified odor in a classroom Thursday morning.

According to Sacramento Fire, the odor was described as ‘chemically’ by students and staff in a classroom.

The 10 students had minor complaints and were being transported in stable condition.

Hazmat personnel said Thursday afternoon a leak in the HVAC system was emitting freon. The school district is repairing the system and the area will be isolated until those repairs are complete.
