Family speaks out after fatal Valentine's Day crash: "She had a life ahead of her"

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Megan Hernandez, 18, was killed in a deadly crash after a Valentine's Day double date.

Megan Hernandez, 18, was killed in a deadly crash after a Valentine's Day double date.

Megan was in car with her boyfriend and another couple. They were heading home from the movies when they were sideswiped by a car that caused the accident.

Megan's family is angry, frustrated and most of all, heartbroken, that their daughter who tried to do everything right, lost her life to someone who wasn't being careful.

"How much more can a family take?" Mary Hernandez cried.

Mary was talking about another tragedy that happened to the Hernandez family eight years ago when they lost Megan's father. Mary says this loss may be even harder.

"Nobody is supposed to bury their own children," Mary said through tears. "Children are supposed to bury you, proceed & do better than you did. She never even had a chance. She was trying."

Megan had just graduated high school, was working and going to college. Mary said her daughter always wore her seatbelt and would get upset with other family members for not putting theirs on. She was the type who would get mad when other people littered and would even get out of the car to pick the trash up.

"I was her son in a way," Megan's twin brother Patrick jokingly said. "She wouldn't let me do certain things. If she didn't like the girl I was dating, she would let me know."

Megan was the older twin by five minutes, and Patrick said that was something she never let him forget.

That made all the relatives in the Hernandez living room laugh. Even though they were mourning the loss, they said if Megan was still here, she'd want everyone to be happy.

Police spent most of the morning searching for Rodney Thurman, 39, the driver who CHP believes caused the crash. CHP said Thurman turned himself in around 12:45 p.m.Monday.

Another woman who was in Megan's car has major injuries. The passenger in Rodney's car was also hurt. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash.

There's been a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with Megan's funeral expenses.
