Folsom Cordova hires next superintendent. He has history in Sacramento education

Erik Swanson, a senior advisor at the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence, will take the role July 1 after the current FCUSD superintendent retires.

FOLSOM, Calif. — The Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) hired its next superintendent Thursday.

Erik Swanson, a senior advisor at the teaching, learning and leading center at the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE), will assume the role July 1 after current FCUSD superintendent Sarah Koligian retires June 30, according to a district news release.

The FCUSD Board of Education approved a three-year contract with Swanson after collaborating with education search firm McPherson & Jacobson LLC and seeking input from community members about their preferences for the incoming superintendent, the district said. The board unanimously selected Swanson as the finalist.

The board initially reviewed 36 internal and external candidates, the district said. Interviews conducted April 20-21 whittled it down to 10; Swanson was selected from there.

“I am honored to work with our Board of Trustees in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District,” Swanson said in a statement. "I am excited to join a team that envisions empowering all students to thrive through educational excellence. Throughout my career, I've focused on fostering school experiences in which every student feels seen, safe, connected and included.”

Before joining CCEE, Swanson served as:

“I applaud the Folsom Cordova USD Board of Education for their selection of Erik Swanson as their next Superintendent” said Dave Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools, in a statement. “He is a great match for a district dedicated to providing a world-class education for every student.”

Swanson earned a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of California, Davis, and a master’s in educational counseling from the University of San Francisco, according to the district. He is a Sacramento native and a third-generation alumnus of Sacramento High School.

The FCUSD will host two meet-and-greet events for the community to meet Swanson open to all:
