2 arrested for hate crime after man hit 50+ times in ‘unprovoked’ attack in Folsom

Police say the man was painting near the park gazebo when he was attacked by two people who used homophobic slurs.

FOLSOM, Calif. — Two unhoused people are facing felony charges after an unprovoked attack on a man at a Folsom park.

According to the Folsom Police Department, officers were called for a fight in progress around 9 p.m. Thursday at Folsom City Park.

Police say the victim was alone in the park and painting near the gazebo when the two suspects held him on the ground, punched and kicked him more than 50 times and used homophobic slurs. The victim eventually escaped.

Police say witnesses and surveillance video indicate the attack was unprovoked.

Officers found two people near the area where the attack happened including 35-year-old Ashley Archer and 22-year-old Zakari Newton-Allen. Both were unhoused and living in Folsom.

The pair were arrested and booked on suspicion of felony battery, assault and a hate crime.
