Man dead, woman hurt after accident in Hughson

Deputies said a driver was trying to pass someone while other cars were approaching and tried to make last-minute corrections.

HUGHSON, Calif. — A man is dead and a woman was injured after a fiery accident in Hughson Sunday evening.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said deputies are investigating a deadly crash in the area of Mountain View Road and East Hatch Road. The crash happened around 5:30 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found two pickup trucks on fire. A man in one truck died at the scene. His identity hasn't been released.

The other truck was unoccupied when deputies arrived. The sheriff's office said a woman in the truck got out of the vehicle with help from her husband, who was driving a separate vehicle. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Sgt. Luke Schwartz, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said a driver was trying to pass another car on the road while it wasn't safe to do so. Schwartz said other cars were approaching when the car tried to unsafely pass and the driver tried to make last-minute corrections.

The sheriff's office said after speaking to witnesses investigators believe the man driving the truck struck the woman driving the other truck head-on.

The crash is under investigation.
