Man killed in shootout with Placer Co. deputies identified

The Placer County Sheriff's Office said the man died following a shootout with sheriff's deputies.

COLFAX, Calif. — The man killed in a Thursday night shootout with Placer County Sheriff's deputies was identified as Stephen Todd Sharp, 37.

The shootout in Colfax also left one deputy injured, but that deputy is expected to survive.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies were patrolling the area around the 500 block of South Auburn Street when they found a van in a McDonald's parking lot around 11 p.m. The van matched the description of one involved in a burglary that happened in the area the day prior.

Deputies contacted Sharp, who was in the van, but he was allegedly uncooperative before the shootout began. The sheriff's office said Sharp shot at the deputies and deputies shot back.

Ultimately, Sharp died at the scene. A spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff's Office confirmed Sharp was hit by deputy gunfire. Deputies said he was originally from Tennessee, but he had been living out of his van in the Colfax area.

All deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, which is the sheriff's office policy while the investigation is ongoing.

No additional details surrounding the incident have been released.
