Manteca school lockdown related to student sought in connection to crime

Police say they were looking for a Sierra High School student in connection to a crime investigation.

MANTECA, Calif — Sierra High School in Manteca was temporarily put on lockdown Monday after a student ran from police.

Sgt. Josh Gutierrez says a school resource officer was investigating a crime and was trying to find the student involved. The crime itself was unrelated to the school, but police didn't specify what it was.

Gutierrez says the student ran away when the officer found them, but they were ultimately taken into custody without incident.

In a statement from the school district, officials say the arrest caused a classroom disruption since it happened during school hours, and Sierra High School was temporarily put on lockdown.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Sierra High administration initiated a lockdown response, and all precautions were taken to ensure the safety of students and staff," the school district said in a statement.

Gutierrez says rumors of an active shooter on campus or students with weapons are not true. He says at no point were those part of the investigation.
