Police investigate stolen EDD benefit debit cards

After finding 65 stolen EDD debit cards, police are investigating how the thieves knew where to get them.

The Roseville Police Department is trying to determine where 65 stolen Employment Development Department benefit debit cards came from and how they were stolen.

The investigation began with a homeowner, who caught someone stealing a package off of her front porch after it was delivered by UPS.

Thinking her neighborhood was being targeted, the resident posted the video and a warning on a community Facebook page.

One week later, a stolen credit card was used to book a room at the TownPlace Suites in Roseville, just a few miles away.

When police arrived, they found Justin Lien and Daniel Nelson in the room.

According to police, Lien admitted to being the one caught on camera stealing the package, which contained an EDD debit card.

Police found a total of 65 stolen EDD cards and that has raised a lot of red flags. It seems unlikely that Lien and Nelson would allegedly be able to collect that many cards by randomly stealing packages. So, is somebody tipping them off?

"It would be weird for somebody to have that kind of a collection of those cards," d Roseville police Officer Jerry Wernli said. "(Investigators) are trying to figure out if there's some sort of other connection, trying to figure out how somebody would come across that many."

Police are concerned there may be more victims outside the Roseville area. If you were expecting a card, and didn't receive it, call Bank of America, which with EDD, issues the debit cards, immediately.

Normally these debit cards are sent through the U.S. Postal Service, but users can pay to rush the cards, which get sent via UPS.
