Day 4: Pro-Palestine protest at UC Davis expands

Students said they plan to stay into the summer until the group’s demands are met.

DAVIS, Calif. — On it’s fourth day, the pro-Palestine protest at UC Davis continues to grow from 60 protesters on Monday to more than 100 on Thursday.

Hannah Zeltzer is a law student set to graduate in a matter of days and is also one of the student organizers.

“For law students, graduation is this week but undergraduates are here through June. As a community, we will be here for the foreseeable future until the demands are met,” said Zeltzer.

Students said they plan to stay into the summer until the group’s demands are met.

They have five demands, the first of which is disclosing and divesting funding.

“Ending the exchange program with Korat, a veterinary school in Israel, along with a larger academic boycott in general about ending study abroad programs,” said Zeltzer.

They also want funding for Palestinian classes for the ethnic studies department, amnesty for all students who are protesting and for Chancellor Gary May to resign from his seat on the board with global technology company, Leidos.

UC Davis told ABC10 they are working to mitigate disruption from the protests on campus, and they are in contact with participants about their rights.

They add, “As a public university, UC Davis cannot and will not discipline students for speech protected by the first amendment.” The full statement is available here.

Student protestors at UC Davis said they are in contact with organizers from Sacramento State University after their successful divestment announcement Wednesday.

They also received supplies from them, but there are mixed feelings on campus.

”We just really want a safe campus and we want to feel safe and we want everyone to feel safe regardless, so it’s a little intimidating,” said Lily a second year student on campus.
