Sacramento father facing leg amputation after hit-and-run — family reaches out for help

A 20-year-old father is recovering after a motorcycle crash and hit-and-run near Arden Way and Harvard Street.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The family of a Sacramento father facing leg amputation after a recent hit-and-run motorcycle crash is asking the community for help with his recovery.

Dirk Couvson, 20, was riding his motorcycle Jan. 7 near Arden Way and Harvard Street when he was hit by a driver who left the scene.

Lythia Bouie says she's grateful her son is still alive and able to hug her along with his 10-month-old child.

"January 7 I got a phone call, missed the first one and he called right back saying, 'Mama I got hit by a car, I got hit by a car and they left me. I can't feel my legs,'" Bouie told ABC10. "I asked if he could call 911 through his helmet and stayed on the phone till the ambulance got there, so I could keep him talking."

She says his leg was too swollen to do surgery right away, but doctors plan to amputate it below the knee Wednesday.

It will be Couvson's third surgery since getting to the hospital and Bouie says he is already engaging in physical therapy.

While she's confident her son will walk again, she's launched a GoFundMe campaign to pay not only Couvson's hospital expenses — but to also maintain the apartment he just secured with his child.

He was a caregiver at a senior living facility before the accident and patients have been reaching out with their support after learning he was in the hospital.

"Dirk is just a loving person, even with everything that's happened to him he's still positive and in good spirits. He's ready to go to rehab and he's determined to walk again," she said. "Today was the first time in six days that he held his baby, it was the moment we were all waiting for."
