Sacramento-based Russian national caught helping terrorists faces 20 years in prison

U.S. Attorney's Office representatives say 36-year-old Murat Kurashev sent about $13,000 to terrorists in Syria.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento-based Russian national faces up to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of providing about $13,000 to a terrorist organization in Syria.

Murat Kurashev provided money to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the Secretary of State.

According to U.S. Attorney's officials, Kurashev used money transfer services between July 2020 and February 2021 to send funds to two known couriers of the terrorist organization.

He is set to be sentenced on March 18.
