1 dead after suspicious house fire in Meadowview

The fire was reported along the 7500 block of of Handly Way. Police said the death was being investigated as a homicide.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One person is dead after a house fire in south Sacramento Tuesday night.

The Sacramento Fire Department confirmed the fatality with ABC10. The fire was reported along the 7500 block of of Handly Way in the Meadowview neighborhood around 7:40 p.m.

Fire Captain Justin Sylvia said there was heavy fire conditions coming from the front of the building, which made it tough to push into the house.

Sylvia said two people in the home were able to escape on their own, but another person was found dead inside. Sylvia said the fire was considered suspicious, but it's not clear why.

Few details surrounding the fire have been released at this time, but fire officials said they're working closely with Sacramento Police Department regarding the blaze.

Officer Cody Tapley, spokesperson for Sacramento police, said the death was being investigated as a homicide. He said the fire was reported as an arson.

No additional details were available, but the investigation is ongoing.
