Bats near Golden 1 Center test positive for rabies

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. Early symptoms include, fever, headache and general weakness.

The Sacramento Public Health Department is warning Golden 1 Center visitors that several bats near the venue in downtown Sacramento tested positive for rabies.

The bats were tested by the Public Health Lab after they were found on August 24. Everyone who had known contact with the animals have been identified.

“We have been in communication with the individuals having direct contact with the bats,” said

Dr. Olivia Kasirye, Sacramento County Public Health Officer. “We want other residents and

visitors of the downtown Sacramento area to be aware in case they came into contact with bats

and to remind people of the importance of not touching sick or dead bats and ensuring their

pets are vaccinated for rabies.”

According to the health department, bats are the most frequent carriers of the rabies virus. Avoid any sick/dead bats, as well as any bat that may be out during the day. Instead contact 3-1-1 and report the location. If you do come into contact with one of these animals, contact your health care provider immediately.
