Person discovered dead inside burning home in Fair Oaks | Update

Firefighters described the home as having "hoarder conditions."

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Update: May 27 at 11:45 a.m.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said in an update Monday the person was dead inside the home before the fire. The fire district said it estimates for days.

The cause of the fire appears to be a shorted electrical outlet, according to the fire district.

An unidentified person was discovered dead inside a home that was on fire in Fair Oaks Saturday morning.

Around 6 a.m., Sacramento Metro Fire District crews were called to the 4100 block of Thistledown Raod in the Fair Oaks area of Sacramento County. At the scene, firefighters found a 2-story home on fire.

"They were able to push in and make an aggressive search and a fire attack," said fire department spokesperson Parker Wilbourn. "Unfortunately there was a lot of personal property that was really hindering the operation in getting hose lines where they needed to go but they did do just that, they knocked the fire down."

While searching a back room of the home, firefighters discovered the person's body.

"There were no working smoke alarms in this house," said Wilbourn. "It has not been determined yet if this person passed away before the fire or as a result of the fire."

Wilbourn said that investigators are looking into the person's death and investigating what caused the fire to spark.
