Sinkhole in Sacramento closes road in South Land Park

Part of Theo Way is closed after a sinkhole appeared in the middle of a road in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento road is closed after a sinkhole in the South Land Park neighborhood, Monday.

Part of Theo Way is closed after a sinkhole appeared in the middle of a road in a residential area. The road is closed and multiple cones are surrounding the sinkhole.

Crews are on the scene investigating.

"I was scared, but after when the workers seen it and came to work — it was very relieved that they came and we didn't have to do it by ourselves," said Dylan, a 9-year-old who lives near the sinkhole.

There's no estimated time the road will reopen.

Carlos Eliason, spokesperson for Sacramento's Department of Utilities, said their crew are investigating the cause, but they're aware of an old pipe, roughly 50 to 60 years old, that failed in the road at some time before 6 a.m.

"We've done temporary repairs and although we don't have an estimate for when the road will open, we expect to do permanent repairs after this next storm," said Eliason.
