Study: More millennials are not having sex

Could this be the end of sex? A new study suggests millennials are paving the way.

Could this be the end of sex? A new study suggests millennials are paving the way.

The Archive of Sexual Behavior reports people born in the 1980s and 90s are having less sex than Generation X. The amount of young adults not having sex has more than doubled over the past 30 years.

Fifteen percent of today's 20- to 24-year-olds have not had sex since the age of 18. Compared to Gen Xers born in the 1960s, only six percent of the 20-to 24-year olds had not had sex since the age of 18.

Bob Azzarito, a licensed therapist, works specifically with millennials and says more young people are shying away from commitment.

"Sometimes its fear: fear of relationships, fear of disease," he said.

Azzarito also says many millennials are discovering and maintaining relationships through technology.

"When you are on your device or your phone, you are less likely to be in a situation for sex."

"If I get it I get it. If I don't, I don't," said 20-year-old musician Kvhoindre Coledman.

Coledman is not a virgin but he isn't actively looking for sex either. Music is his passion right now and he wants to focus on his career and making money.

"I got to practice a lot,” Coledman said. “A lady is not something I need now."

Therapists also contribute Millennial abstinence to the abundance of adult entertainment.

"The business is booming now," said Taylor Alfaro, a manager of an adult entertainment shop. Alfaro noted a lot of his customers come in because they are tired of dating.

For whatever the reason millennials stopped having sex, experts agree right now there is little impact when 85 percent of millennials are still procreating.
