Man sentenced in 2019 robbery turned murder in Sacramento County

Smith was arrested in Nevada in July 2019.

CALIFORNIA, USA — A man was sentenced Friday to life in prison for a 2019 robbery turned murder in Sacramento County.

Tyler Smith was convicted of first-degree murder during a robbery among other charges in February 2024. He was sentenced to life without parole, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

Smith killed Scott Chase II, who was living with one of Smith's friends. While Chase was out of town, his home was burglarized and Smith's gun was among the items stolen from the roommate's safe. Smith believed Chase was the burglar and planned to confront him and take back his property.

In June 2019, Smith went to Chase's home with a gun. When Chase returned home in the morning, Smith hit him with the gun before shooting him in the head. Smith put Chase inside his own SUV.

The SUV was later found abandoned by a security guard. Smith was arrested in Nevada in July 2019. The gun used in the murder was never found, according to the district attorney's office.
