Sacramento’s Tower Theatre to celebrate its 85th anniversary

The cinema opened its doors in 1938. Now, it looks forward to 'many years to come.'

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Tower Theatre will hold a celebration Saturday to mark its 85th anniversary. The theater, an affiliate of Reading International Inc., opened on Land Park Drive in Sacramento Nov. 11, 1938.

After purchasing an $8.50 ticket, guests can enjoy a presentation about the theater, a screening of Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1990 Oscar-winning film “Cinema Paradiso,” dessert in the lobby and an organ presentation by Dave Moreno, the Tower’s featured musician most Saturdays.

“We’re overwhelmed with the love and support from the Sacramento community and look forward to many years to come,” said Terri Moore, vice president of operations for Reading International’s U.S. Cinemas.

Concessions are also $8.50, and options include a small popcorn and soda, a glass of Riondo Prosecco Nero or one of the Tower's "signature" cocktails, according to a news release.

The theater’s 2024 lineup includes a 70MM showing of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” along with its usual classic, Studio Ghibli and Hitchcocktober showings, according to Dave Parker, the Tower Theatre’s general manager.

The event marks the introduction of the Sacramento Tower District focusing on preserving and highlighting the theater’s legacy, according to Joan Borucki, the new district’s executive director.

“The district is kicking off a new branding campaign to coincide with the physical remake of Broadway through the city of Sacramento’s Complete Streets Project,” Borucki said.

The project is designed to improve vehicle, bicycle and foot safety and calm traffic in the two-mile Broadway corridor between 3rd and 29th streets south of downtown Sacramento, according to the city’s website.
